6 facts you probably don't know about butts

We have many names for the things we love. Our butt is no exception. Whether you prefer “booty”, “behind” or “the money maker” it is a fact that all butts are good butts. Listed below are 6 other facts you might not know about butts.

1. Women tend to have bigger butts than men

Estrogen causes fat to accumulate in the buttocks as opposed to the stomach, which is much better and could be one of the reasons why women live longer than men.

2. It is powerful as heck

Your butt is made up of the gluteal muscles which is the most powerful muscle group on the body. In fact, it is made up of three muscles that all work together and make sure you can move around, rise from a sitting position, climb stairs and stay in an erect position. Go butt!

3. Some turtles can breathe through their butt

This is thought to be because of evolution though not all turtles have this magic trick. The Eastern painted turtle uses this trick for saving energy.

4. That dance

We can’t get around this one. In 2013 the word “twerking” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary. We probably don’t need to explain what it is but just in case it slipped you, twerking is defined as “a dance or dance move involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance”. It is distinctly a black American cultural staple and has been since the 1980s. Now, go twerk!

5. There's a fly named after Beyoncé

No, we’re not kidding. In 2012, a rare species of horse fly was names Scaptia Beyonceae because of its gold butt.

6. “Belfie” because “selfie” is getting old

Butt selfies are the new normal.
